Giving Thanks

This week we made a Tree of Thanks. :) I got the idea from FamilyFun online.

It was really easy and fun to make and a great way for everyone to express their gratitude for the many blessing in their lives. All you need is a tree branch, some paper to cut leaf shapes from, a hole puncher, some yarn or string, scissors, a pen, pencil or marker, and a base to hold your Thankful Tree (we used a milk glass vase, but you could also use a flower pot or jar).

Cut out leaf shapes from your paper and then have each family member write on their leaf (or leaves) what they are thankful for, then punch a hole in the top each leaf and hang from the tree using your yarn or string. We displayed our Tree of Thanks in our living room but it would also make a great table centerpiece for Thanksgiving.

I loved reading what my kids came up with to be thankful for in their lives for their leaves. Everytime I look at it it makes my heart happy and reminds me of how much we have to be thankful for. :)

Here is what they wrote (or in the case of Ella what she told me and I wrote for her):

Ella said she is thankful for her family, rainbows, flowers, and dogs
Gwen said she is thankful for her family, food, and her pets
Raven said she is thankful for family and banana splits

The Honey Fest

We had a fun day at the Honey Fest with friends. We taste tested several flavors of wonderful local honey. The lavender infused honey was my favorite, while Gwen liked the lemon verbena honey best...so we bought both. :) Yum! We watched local bee keepers extracting honey, we learned some fun new facts about bees, stopped by a couple area yard sales (I swear Raven can spot them from a mile away lol), and Mikayla even held a bee on her finger while it ate honey. :)

My (or hubby's) favorite thing about blackberries...

is cobbler! Mmmmm! :)

I've tried 3 different cobbler recipes this blackberry season and still by far the easiest, simplest one tasted the best.....the recipe on the back of the Jiffy's Baking Mix box. Go figure. lol

Look What I Found Among the Rue

Last week while weeding in the garden I came across a swallowtail caterpillar happily dining on my rue plant. The girls wanted to bring it inside so they could witness it's metamorphosis. They fed him fresh stalks of bishop's weed every day as we watched him fatten up in preparation for the next stage of his life.

Sunday when I peeked into the cage I found it in it's chrysalis stage. Nature is so amazing. :) We can't wait to watch it emerge from it's chrysalis as a beautiful butterfly. What a gift to be able to witness it up close before our eyes.
